Fortran is a general-purpose, procedural, imperative programming language mainly used for quantitative and scientific calculation.
It has a lengthy history and continually evolves: J. W. Backus created the initial language proposal in 1953. The first international standard was ratified in 1966, and the most recent significant standard version (with new features), Fortran 2018, was released in 2018. Fortran 202X (formerly known as Fortran 2020) is the next iteration in the works.
Fortran is widely used in scientific computing and accounts for a significant portion of numerical codes executed on supercomputers.
